Full Description

Wester Ross Project - Cathy Dagg, 03/04

Alternative Gaelic name an t-Eirthire donn, an t-Eirthire bhos: the brown side or edge.

Differing from most crofting townships on the Gairloch estate in the houses not having been laid out on the crofts, but retaining a nucleus of settlement surrounded by irregular lots. As recorded on the 1st edition OS map, a number of buildings, mostly on a roughly NE-SW alignment, clustered above and below the road. These are either still in use or low grass covered footings. Evidence of rig cultivation at the south end of the township immediately inside at turf dyke east of the road, and on the hillside near the boundary with First Coast, crossed by later rubble dykes.

------
There is as yet little new development in the township, although one building plot has been cleared below the road. Any new building along the road will have an impact on the archaeology.

NG99SW 10 centred on 927 906
A crofting township comprising thirty-seven roofed, one partially roofed and six unroofed buildings, their associated enclosures and field walls, and a head-dyke is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire and Cromartyshire 1881, sheet xx). Fourteen roofed and twenty-six unroofed buildings, their associated enclosures and field walls, and a head-dyke are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1969).
