HMS KING EDWARD VII struck a mine laid by the German raider SMS MOEWE in the western entrance to the Pentland Firth. It was taken in tow but sank 9 hours later after being abandoned by the entire ships company.

The vessel sank in the approximate position 58 43 00N, 004 12 00W.

12 December 1957. A request for information was received with reference to possible salvage.

22 November 1966. A very good sonar contact was made at 58 42 12N, 003 53 24W. The extent was 130 feet (39.6 metres) and the height 18.2 in a general depth of 118 metres.

11 January 1984. A large wreck was examined on the 30 July 1984 at 58 42 22N, 003 53 34W - obtained using syledis. Decca co-ordinates = (n.scot) red e 17.7, purple d 54.2. The least echo sounder depth was 94 in a general depth of 108 metres. No scouring was observed. The side scan sonar indicted a height of 14 metres, and length of 120 metres (393 feet). The vessel is lying with its keel on an orientation of 170/350 degrees.

3 April 1986. An enquiry was received regarding the salvage rights from Mr Bruce, Stromness.
