Full Description

Site of (NAT) Pict's House (NR) Stone Cist containing an Urn, Human Remains, and Bronze Ornament found here (NAT)
OS 25" map, Caithness, (1872)
Mr Doull (farmer, Bylbster) was removing stones from this cairn when he discovered a stone cist 'of the usual description'; in removing this cist he found, and broke, an urn. In this cairn he also found a bronze shoe buckle and a great quantitiy of bones, some calcined. Mr Doull says that he gave the buckle and many pieces of bone to late Dr Sinclair of Wick for transmission to the Edinburgh Museum. <1>
A slight swelling in a grass field marks site of this cairn, of which no trace now remains. No further information was obtained.
Visited by OS (W D J) 24 April 1963.
(ND 2572 5409) Cairn (NR) (site of) OS 1:10,000 map, (1975)
As described. Visited by OS (N K B) 29 April 1982
Cairn and cist, Bylbster. Dimensions: 49 x 33m. Subcircular grass-covered rise 0.25-0.30m high.
R J Mercer, NMRS MS/828/19, 1995
The site was visted by C Dagg in 2000 during a walkover survey in advanace of a proposed new water main. It was noted that the grass-covered rise mentioned by the NMRS in 1995 was not visible at this location. The given location of the site lay on the opposite side of the road from the proposed route of the pipeline and would probably remain unaffected. <2>
