Full Description

ND02SE 7 0835 2392 and 0825 2407.

Within the depopulated settlement of Bad an Achaid are two earlier structures:
'A', at ND 0835 2392 is an enclosure, 15m diameter, scooped into slope on N side, and formed by an earth-and stone wall 0.9m high. The entrance, 1.1m wide, is in S. Two small, semicircular compartments lie against the inside of the bank in the N half of the enclosure.
The second enclosure, 'B', at ND 0825 2407, formed by an earth-and-stone bank 0.5m high, measures 14.5m E-W by 13.5m transversely. The entrance, 1m wide, is in S; interior is featureless except for one stone set upright 3.5m from the N side. It measures 0.5 by 0.15 by 0.6m high. An earth-and-stone bank forms a large semicircular enclosure abutting on the E segment of the main enclosure. No entrance was noted in this outer enclosing bank.
Visited by OS (W D J) 14 June 1960.

(A: ND 0835 2392) Enclosure (NR), (B: ND 0825 2407) Enclosure (NR) OS 6" map, (1964)

Of two enclosures, which are generally as described by previous field investigator, southerly (A) is a hut circle, while (B) is a homestead.
The hut circle is turf and heather-covered and set into slope; it is 13m in internal diameter. The wall expands from a spread of 2.5m generally to 3.5m at the entrance. The two compartments previously noted appear to be debris from the wall.
The homestead is bipartite and figure-of-eight shaped, measuring 19m E-W by 12.5m transversely within a heather-covered wall spread to 2.5m all round. W compartment, containing the upright slab noted by the previous OS field surveyor, is circular, 12.5m in diameter with an entrance in the S, and the E is crescentic; the intervening wall is noticeably less strong than the surrounding wall of the homestead. The entrance to the E compartment appears to be from the NW where the outer wall and dividing wall meet.
Revised at 1:10560. Visited by OS (J B) 2 September 1982.
