Full Description
NC60NE 14.01 6713 0686, 6694 0676 and 6710 0672
There are three hut-circles within the township of Tosc-airigh (NC60NE 14.00). The first (NC 6713 0686, ROG95 619) is situated on flat ground close to the Abhainn Leataidh. It measures 10.6m in diameter within a grassed-over wall 1m thick and up to 0.6m high. The wall is faceted rather than smoothly curving and edge-set stones mark the line of the inner face. No entrance is apparent; this may have been blocked up during later reuse of the site. The second hut-circle is situated about 120m to the S at NC 6710 0672 (ROG95 633). It measures 10.5m in diameter within a wall 1.3m thick, faced inside and out with edge-set stones and standing 0.6m high. A subrectangular building, measuring internally 8.6m by 3m, stands in the S part of the interior, and outside the hut-circle, to the E, there is a small enclosure. The third hut-circle, positioned on higher ground to the W of the others, is closer to the core of the later township, and is poorly preserved (ROG95 629; NC 6694 0676). Only the E arc survives, reduced to a bank 1m thick and 0.3m high, terraced out on an E-facing slope. The hut probably measured about 9.5m in internal diameter, but the W arc has been destroyed by later enclosures, which also overlie part of the E side.
