Full Description

NG44SE 44 G. Ref: NG485 435 (approx 6-fig. general location)
The Harbour at Portree can be found between Grid co-ordinates NG 4845 - 48555: 4345 - 4348. It basically consists of a bay with its own Pier attached (see NG44SE 55; Numlink No. 99385); the grid reference range indicated above is centred upon a small area of this bay (slightly northwards of the Main Pier), though there is also a smaller Boathouse at NG 4894 4379

John Gifford book says that Thomas Telford built the harbour in 1818-20 and that Potree was little more than a score of houses most of them slated in 1851. Thereafter it grew rapidly to become the largest town on Skye. John Duncan, 4/1/01
