Monument record MHG2571 - Glen Albyn

Centred at NH 369 082 are the remains of an early field system defined by stone clearance heaps and irregular walls. The area is now partly occupied by the Fort Augustus Golf Course. At NH 3696 0839 are traces of a circular enclosure, possibly a hut circle, measuring c. 9.5m between the centres of a scarcely discernible stony bank with a gap, probably an entrance, in the ESE. The bank immediately N of this gap is expanded into a stony mound c. 3.0m in diameter. The W half of the enclosure occurs in grass on a fairway; the E half is obscured by heather.

On Fort Augustus golf course are two similar, ill-defined hut circles ('A' and 'B') and the vestigal remains of a field system. 'A' at NH 3697 0839, discovered by the previous investigator, lies half on a fairway and half in heather. 'B' at NH 3703 0832 is situated in heather. Both huts measure approximately 8.0m in diameter within vague walls spread to 1.5m to 2.0m wide and 0.2m in average height. Each hut has an entrance in the E quarter. Later cultivation defined by low walls and rigs, followed by the construction of the golf course, has virtually obliterated the early cultivation which is represented by a few scattered small clearance heaps.
