Steam Tug ST CLAUS, 400 ton. Lost 21 Sep 1942, Ness of Duncansby, 1 mile from Duncansby Head Lighthouse. Wind east, fresh breeze, sea moderate but heavy surf on shore, heavy rain. Tug ST CLAUS had MV GOLD CROWN in tow. Tow rope snapped and GOLD CROWN drove ashore, & tug ST CLAUS also going ashore trying to take her off. All saved, 36 in all on both vessels. No cargo. Motor vessel GOLD CROWN used as a water boat, was being towed to a south port for a refit, and no cargo on board. Both vessels expected to become total wrecks.
