Full Description
At the W end of the pebble bar between the sea and Loch Poll an Dunain, and about 100m to the SW of the broch (NC00NW 3.00) there are the remains of a hut, a small enclosure, two boat nausts and a slipway. The subrectangular hut (ACHIL94 83) has been sunk into the N (landward) side of the bar at NC 0276 0686. It measures 3.2m E-W by 1.9m transversely, it has an entrance in the N side and the interior is overgrown with nettles. Immediately to the SE, on top of the bar, there are the slight remains of a small pentagonal enclosure. About 20m to the E of the hut, set into the S side of the bar and just above High Water Mark, there are the remains of a naust, which measures 2.7m NW-SE by 2.2m transversely (ACHIL94 82, NC 0278 0687). It has a rounded NW end and an open SE end. A slipway, constructed of large, rounded stones, runs SE down the beach from this naust. To the NE, at NC 0280 0690, there is another, larger, naust, sunk into the centre of the bar and still in use.
This bay is annotated on Morrison's 1775 map of the Barony of Coigach as the 'beach where they haul up their boats', but no structures are depicted (SRO E 746/189). The 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ross and Cromarty 1906, sheet iii) depicts the hut described above, but it is not clear whether it was in use at that time.
