Full Description

What may be eight unroofed shieling-huts and a wall are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1873, sheet cxxvii). An enclosure and a wall are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1970).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 12 September 1996
This shieling hut settlement was noted by Stuart Farrell during a 2010 DBA and walkover survey in advance of a woodland creation scheme. The settlement was called Bolugie on Roy's Military Map of 1747-55, but was not shown on John Thomsons map of 1832. The 1st ed OS (1873) showed a number of rectangular structures without a name for the area. This was shown again on the 2nd ed OS (1903). There was also a square-shaped enclosure shown on the OS maps from 1970 and 1992.
The walkover survey revealed nine structures (see report for individual feature descriptions). These buildings were of similar size and related to a former pre-improvement settlement landscape. They seemed to have been abandoned in the late 18th or early 19th century, but were reused for sheep grazing. The area was still used for sheep grazing at the time of this survey. <1>
Note: From Aps 1999-2001, there is a strong possibility that additional shieling huts could run along the burn east-southeast of the northern half of the monument area. S Salem 20/11/2013
