Full Description

NN69NE 23 6802 9915

This township comprises the grass-grown, faced-rubble footings of five rectangular buildings, a circular enclosure and a plot, all of which lie on a hummocky terrace between the River Calder and Glenballoch. Three of the buildings measure from 4m by 2.2m to 5.4m by 2.1m internally, while the other two are somewhat larger, measuring 9.5m by 3.2m (KING95 744) and 10.5m by 3.5m (KING95 748). Where the position of the entrance is visible (KING95 744, 746-7), it is in the side wall, on either the S or SE. Three of the buildings (KING95 744-5, 747) have been divided into two compartments, with, in one instance (KING95 747), what may have been a byre drain in one compartment. The fragmentary remains of what may have been an L-shaped structure are overlain by one of the buildings (KING95 746). A circular enclosure lies at the S side of the buildings and to the E a stony bank defines a C-shaped area, the interior of which has been cultivated.
The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet ci) depicts one building (KING95 744) as roofed, and another (KING95 745) as unroofed. The plot to the E of these buildings is also shown.
