The British steamship INGER TOFT (ex ELPHINSTON), built in 1920 by Swan Hunter, was torpedoed by U722 (commanded by Reimers) at 9.20 on 16 march 1945. The position given was bearing 270 degrees, 3 miles from Neist Point. 30 survivors were picked up by the anti-submarine trawler GRENADIER. The position is as given in German records, and also in 'British Vessel Lost at Sea 1939-45'. 'Lloyds World War 2 Losses' gives the latitude as 57 25 30N. She had been enroute from Reykjavik to Loch Ewe and London with a cargo of 604 tons of herring meal and 281 tons of cod liver oil. A number of barrels of cod liver oil were recovered in the Western Highlnds.
