GLEN ALBYN was lost in the entrance ot Loch Ewe on 23 December 1939 when she detonated a magnetic mine laid almost 2 months previously by U31 on 28 October 1939. The date and cause of GLEN ALBYN's loss are given in 'British Vessels Lost at Sea 1939-45' and in Rohwer's 'Axis Submarine Successes 1939-45'. 'Lloyds World War 2 Loses gives the date as 1940 and says 'sunk by Admiralty in secret circumstances'.
GLEN ALBYN and PROMOTIVE sunk during magnetic mine detection tests. The wrecks now lie half a mile apart and part of the copper coils have been recovered.
