Full Description

NN16SW 8 1275 6153 and 1279 6152

A possible charcoal burning platform (NMRS MS 738/31, no.31) and a second platform, situated on the S-facing slope overlooking Loch Leven, were recorded during a pre-afforestation survey by AOC (Scotland Ltd). The possible charcoal burning platform, at NN 1275 6153, lies immediately E of a small burn, and measures 8m in diameter. It is levelled into the hillside on the N to 0.5m in depth whilst there is a slight trace of a revetment around the front edge. The second platform lies about 50m to the ESE at NN 1279 6152, immediately N of a footpath. It comprises a scoop, hollowed into the hillside to a depth of 0.4m. A mature birch tree is growing in the middle of the platform and it is unclear if the feature is the result of tree planting or if it represents the reuse of a feature such as a hut platform or a charcoal burning platform.
