Full Description
NC70NW 148 7038 0517
In addition to a roofed farmhouse, the remains of this township comprise three buildings, a cartshed, a store, and a kiln, and it is surrounded by a head-dyke enclosing an area of cultivated ground on which faint traces of ridging are visible.
All but one of the buildings are disposed in two clusters, one at the extreme SW of the township (NC 7032 0502) and the other by the roofed farmhouse (NC 7038 0517). The lone building (ROG95 812), which predates the head-dyke, is more reduced than the rest, and stands on its own on the E of the township (NC 7048 0513). It measures 5.6m from E to W by 3.1m within rubble walls, 0.7m thick, reduced to 0.5m in height (ROG95 812).
The SW group comprises two buildings and a kiln-barn (ROG95 807, 813-4). The larger building of the group is a small farmhouse of two compartments, which is set into the slope on the NW, and measures 11.2m from NE to SW by 3.4m transversely within faced-rubble walls, 0.7m thick and up to 1m high, with an extension on the NE (2.1m across), and an entrance on the SE. In the interior there is a blocked door in the partition and a fireback set against the SW gable, 0.9m in breadth, 1.1m high and 0.2m thick (ROG95 814). The smaller building, measures 3.8m from E to W by 2.4m transversely within faced-rubble walls 0.6m thick and up to 1m high, with an entrance on the S (ROG95 807). The kiln (ROG95 813), which is set into the slope on the N a short distance ENE of the larger building, appears to be oval on plan, measuring 2.1m from E to W by 1.5m transversely, and 0.5m deep, with a flue on the S; the flue opens into a much reduced kiln-barn which measures 2m by 1.4m internally.
The group by the roofed farmhouse (not recorded) comprises a cartshed and a shed or pigsty (ROG95 808-9). The cartshed (ROG95 809) is situated to the N of the farmhouse and measures 3.8m from WNW to ESE by 1.9m transversely within walls 0.65m thick and up to 1.4m high, with an entrance in the ESE. The shed or pigsty is situated in between the cartshed and the farmhouse and is set into the ground on the W to a depth of 0.9m, measuring 2.2m by 1.4m, with a rubble-walled extension on the ESE that is as big again, with an entrance in the ESE.
The present farmhouse and three of the buildings and huts (ROG95 807, 814, 809) are depicted as roofed on the 1st edition OS 6-inch map (Sutherlandshire 1878, sheet 96).
