Full Description

Two distinct phases of settlement are evident in the fourteen structures (ROG95 64-75, 78, 79) which are situated on the first major terrace above the S bank of the River Brora. The more recent phase is represented by the remains of a 19th century, presumably crofting, farmstead, comprising a core of buildings (ROG95 64-7) with several outliers (ROG95 72, 74) all of which are depicted as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheet xcvi) and named 'Creagbheag'. The farmhouse (ROG95 67) lies at the centre of the settlement and has mortared-rubble walls, a fireplace and windows flanking a central doorway. The other buildings, including a byre (ROG95 64), have coursed-rubble footings, and at least five stack-stands are visible in the enclosure to the NW of the farmhouse. There are few changes by the date of the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1907, sheet xcvi) (where it is named Craggiebeg) and, while one building (ROG95 72) appears to have fallen out of use completely, two further buildings (ROG95 69, 70) are shown (as roofed) for the first time. One of these (ROG95 70) is a kiln-barn.
A pre-crofting phase of settlement is represented by the remains of four buildings (ROG95 68, 71, 78, 79), which are not depicted on the 1st edition map, and a fifth (ROG95 75), which is shown as unroofed. What may have been the dwelling at the core of this earlier settlement comprises the grass-grown footings of a rectangular building measuring 23.8m by 3.6m internally, with a scooped compartment at the downslope end, which may have been a byre. At the NW end of the settlement a C-shaped scooped into the back of a terrace (ROG95 79) may have been a kiln.
(ROG95 64-75, 78, 79)

Two farmstead named Creagbheag are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheets xcvi). The E farmstead (NC 7390 0825) has five roofed buildings, one partially roofed and one unroofed building. The farmstead to the W (NC 7370 0822) has five roofed buildings and two enclosures.
