Four burnt mounds are ranged along a watercourse on a terrace at the top of the escarpment on the N side of the River Fleet. Three (ROG95 138-40) lie in a group at the E end of Marian's Rock (NC 749 012) with an outlier to the WNW (ROG95 115, NC 7484 0138). They range from 4.5m by 2.5m (ROG95 139) to 9.1m by 5.6m (ROG95 53) across and up to 1m in height; three are C-shaped (ROG95 115, 138, 140) while the fourth is oval (ROG95 139). Where there was no exposure of the content of the mound a sod was lifted to reveal cracked stone, charcoal and black soil.
An iron post-and-wire fence mounted on a turf bank defines an enclosure measuring about 200m by 10m, which is situated on the leading edge of the terrace. The N side of enclosure is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheet civ), while the 2nd edition (Sutherland 1907, sheet civ) depicts both sides.
(ROG95 115, 138-40)
