Full Description

NC61SE 16 6886 1010

There are at least six buildings and eight shieling-huts, and a corn-drying kiln, scattered across the the SSW-facing slopes of Meall Achadh na Luachrach in a band about 300m in length and 100m in breadth between the 250m and 275m contours. One building (ROG95 905) has been built over the remains of a hut-circle (NC61SE 16, ROG05 1022) which is probably contemporary with the small cairns, banks and lynchets within the area.
The six buildings (ROG95 800, 901-2, 904-6) measure between 6.9m and 9.3m in length and between 2.3m and 2.6m in breadth within turf-and-stone walls up to 0.6m thick which stand 0.4m high at most. Four buildings have a recess, probably a bedneuk, in one of the side walls, and one of these four (ROG95 902, NC 6899 0997) also has an internal partition, with the bedneuk in the upper compartment. The lower compartment of this building, through which the building was entered, slopes downhill, and although no drain was evident it is likely that this compartment served as a byre. The kiln (ROG95 903) is situated at NC 6898 1003. It comprises a semi-circular bowl, 1m in diameter and 0.5m deep, set into the hillside and faced with rubble. There is a barn attached on the SW (downhill) side, measuring 2.2m by 1.3m within a stony bank 0.6m thick.
Most of the huts are concentrated in a group to the W of the other structures, centred around NC 6883 1010, although there are two at the SE edge of the site. They measure between 2.5m and 5.4m in length and between 1.7m and 2.4m in breadth within turf-and-stone walls generally reduced to a height of 0.3m or less. Two huts (ROG95 907 and 908 at NC 6885 1009) stand together on a turf mound 0.5m high which is probably composed of the remains of earlier huts, and there are other slight mounds in the vicinity which may mark the sites of further structures.
The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheet xcvi) depicts only one of these buildings (ROG95 901), which by that time was roofless.
