Full Description
NC60NE 20 6985 0985
There are two hut-circles and a scatter of small cairns on a heather-covered hillside to the N of the Grumby Burn.
The N hut-circle (ROG95 81, NC 6985 0985), which has been levelled into the slope, measures 9.3m from ESE to WNW by 8.6m transversely within a stony bank 2.4m in thickness and 0.6m in height. A drain runs around the upslope side of the hut-circle, taking water away from the house. The terminals of the bank expand to 3.6m in thickness on either side of the entrance, which lies on the ESE, and the passage is faced with large boulders.
The character of the S hut-circle (ROG95 82, NC 6986 0980) differs from the first; it comprises an oval mound measuring 12.2m from NW to SE by 9.6m transversely overall and 0.4m in height. The top of the mound is slightly dished, with a low stony bank running around the crest, and, on the SE, a dip in the line of the bank may have been the entrance.
The hut-circles are situated within a thin scatter of at least thirty small cairns (ROG95 1019), measuring up to 4m in diameter and 0.4m in height. An irregular bank runs to the S of the small cairns, demarcating the edge of the boggy ground.
