Full Description

NH60NE 2 6909 0539

There is a group of eleven shieling-huts about 900m ESE of the summit of Carn Sgulain, disposed along the banks of the Allt Bruthach an Easain as it crosses a grassy terrace at 740m OD, above the craggy slopes at the head of the Allt a' Chaorainn. The huts are mostly rectangular, measuring between 2.7m and 4.8m in length and between 1.7m and 2.3m in breadth within rubble walls 0.6m to 0.8m in thickness which stand up to 0.5m high.
Three huts (possibly KING95 55-57) are depicted, unroofed, on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet lxxxvi), but it is noteworthy that they do not appear on George Brown's 1771 map of the Gordon Estates N of the River Spey (SRO RHP 1835), a map which identifies many other shieling sites in the area.
(KING95 54-64)
Visited by RCAHMS (SDB) 26 September 1995
