Full Description
NN79NW 9.02 7018 9949
This mill is situated on the E bank of the River Calder on the floor of the deeply incised valley. The mill building is rectangular, measuring 9.6m form E to W by 3.7m transversely within faced-rubble footings 0.7m in thickness and 0.5m in height. The entrance is in the N side and the wheel pit lies at the W end of the building. The lade runs into the W end of the building from the N, curving around the base of the valley side apparently to take water from the Caochan na Buaile Duibhe, rather than the River Calder.
At the E end of the building there is a roughly rectangular kiln, measuring 3.8m from E to W by 2m within a bank with an inner face of coursed rubble and a turf embanked outer. Both the mill and kiln are referred to in a local tradition (Anon 1965) and the building is depicted as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet ci). A terraced trackway traverses the valley side, leading down through the township buildings to the mill.
