Full Description
NN79NW 9.04 7058 9933
These buildings are situated at the SE end of the terrace on the E bank of the River Calder. They fall into two clusters of four buildings, which may have formed farmsteads (NN 706 993, 707 993). Seven of the buildings range from 7m by 3.4m (KING95 476) to 9.9m by 2.6m (KING95 478) within faced-rubble footings or a stony bank up to 1.1m in thickness and 0.4m in height. One much larger building (KING95 480) measures 16m by 3.5m internally and has two compartments.
Three of the E group (NN 707 993) of buildings (KING95 480-2) form a courtyard, containing a midden hollow, with the fourth building (KING95 483) to the W. One of the buildings around the courtyard (KING95 481) has been a byre, with stone-built platforms on both sides of a drain which empties out of the entrance in the SW side.
The W group of buildings (KING95 476-9; NN 706 993) are ranged along the leading edge of a terrace to the N of a rectangular enclosure (NN 7060 9931), which may have been a garden plot. A drain empties out through the entrance of a building (KING95 477) which has been a byre. A bedneuk, measuring 3m by 2.3m internally, extends from the centre of the ESE side of a further building (KING95 479). A subrectangular hut (KING95 496), measuring 2.1m by 1.4m internally, has been levelled into a low plough scar to the S of the buildings.
Two of the buildings (KING95 476-7) in the W group are depicted as unroofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet ci), together with the enclosure. A further unroofed building is shown in roughly the location of the E group of buildings. The depiction does not correspond to any of the buildings recorded on the date of visit and it may have lain along the NE side of the courtyard.
