Full Description
NG20SE 66 2720 0472 and 2718 0467
A roofed cottage, an enclosure and three buildings are situated on the E shore of the large tidal bay on the N side of Sanday. The cottage (NG 2720 0472) may occupy the site of an earlier building, and has a drainage trench to the rear and a garden enclosed by a wall to the front. The truncated remains of a building form an outshot extending from the SW end of the cottage, and the robbed remains of another lie 10m to the SE within the wall of the garden.
The third building (NG 2718 0467) lies about 40m to the SSW of the cottage and has been set end-on into the slope; it is U-shaped on plan, with its open end on the NW. Outside the garden wall, to the NW, there is a polygonal enclosure set below a crag and defined by a stony bank on three sides.
Four roofed buildings and a stretch of walling are depicted at this location on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire, 1881, sheet lix), but they cannot be reconciled with any degree of certainty to the features surviving today.
(Canna 88-90, 92-93).
Visited by RCAHMS (ARG), 8 March 1996.
