Full Description

NN69NE 3.05 6850 9942 and 6861 9930

There are two limekilns built into the leading edges of natural terraces in the improved grassland to the SE of the township (NN69NE 3.02). The N kiln (KING95 739, NN 6850 9942) comprises a bowl measuring 2.9m from E to W by 1.9m transversely within a stony bank spread to 0.9m in thickness and 0.4m in height. The flue is on the W. The smoke chamber of the second kiln (KING95 741, NN 6861 9930) is square, measuring 2.6m across within a boulder-faced bank 0.9m in thickness and 1m in height. The flue, which is on the S, is about 1m in width. On the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1872, sheet ci) the kiln is depicted as a circle with a central dot and annotated Limekiln (the limekiln to the E (NN 69NE 6.02) is also depicted in this way).
To the S of the township a turf-banked enclosure (NN 6839 9946) is situated in the same location as an open circle depicted on the 1st edition of the OS map which is also labelled as a limekiln. This feature differs from the kilns described above and the depiction may be a mistake.
