Monument record MHG29243 - Wolf Lair, Durness

WOLF FOUND !
An interesting discovery in a remote area of limestone country near Durness in North West Sutherland has been reported to the Highland Archaeology Service. A local man, caving about lOOm into a narrow passage reported a find of bones. The find has since been taken to the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh.
Among some unidentified bones there were wolf and human remains. No artifacts were found, so it is difficult to date the bones, however, wolves have not existed in the highlands for at least 300 years. It is also not yet clear when or how the bones came to be in the cave. It may be that the human bones formed part of a meal for the wolf, as only part of a human skeleton seemed to be present. Also, access for humans is very difficult via an entry only some three feet in diameter. Presently, the remains are being studied at the National Museums of Scotland, in the hope that this will shed more light on this unusual discovery.
