Full Description
Site visit on 17/5/00 - revealed banks delineating much of Blar na Coille, along with the bank remnants, as the remains of a Roman Marching Camp. A flat, raised platform within Long Wood is interpreted as a signal station.
The area has been planted with trees since the area was a forfeited estate after the '45 and it is possible that, whatever the origins of the banks, they were used as boundaries for the planting at the time.
We should certainly attempt to investigate any information ( e.g. roman finds) which might confirm the provenance of these earthworks and perhaps encourage Donald Coghill to write up a short report for the SMR. At the moment, there is no hard evidence for any of the possible interpretations, so we must maintain an open view on what this might be.
