Full Description

A limekiln is marked on a plan by John Farey (Mineral Surveyor) at this location. The plan was made in 1813 and shows the location of bell pits, salt pans, limekilns and stores associated with the early workings of Brora coal. The plan is now held in the National Map Library, Edinburgh.

------
A Clinker Mound. This uneven mound is situated adout 120 yds E of the fence which marks the boundary between Inverbrora and the Links. The Links is now used as a 9-hole Golf-course called "Gleneagles", and dates back before the turn of the 19thc.

This mound is 1.25m in height. When the new road to the Sewerage Works was cut, it sliced through the centre of this mound revealing considerable coal debris at ground level. The mound is topped by a pile of Clinker, I;e; Burnt coal etc, and thus the 5th hole was always known as the 'Rocky'. This fused material provides clear evidence that a fire existed here and may indicate that pre-factory salt was panned near the coal or simply a heap of coal caught fire. Asnother possibility would be the site of something like a blacksmith's shop for intermittent tool repair.
A 'Market Stance' is marked on the OS 1st edition map at this location.
