Full Description

On a hillside above Loch Ailort are a number of "slip trenches". There are about 10 in number and consist of approx. 1m wide & deep trenches, constructed when the army trained in the area during the 2nd World War. Trainees were put ashore on the opposite side of the loch and had to "land" near where the present fish farm lies. They then had to ascend the hill above, Seann Cruach. The trainers positioned themselves in the trenches and assisted in the training by firing live rounds at the trainees as they tried to ascend the hill. Information from H Clyne, Moidart Local History Group. The trenches are still discernible today, although overgrown and the main threat comes from accidentally falling into them.
A M Fox, Highland Council, 11.09.01.
