Full Description

An observation post used by the 39 Group of the RAF observer Corp (later Royal Observer Corp) during WWII. The post itself was a turf dug-out, with a wooden floor and walls. The walls were painted with a 360 degree panorama, displaying the heights of the hills, by Ronald Fane Martin, the man in charge of Inverness-shire, Moray and Nairn (see attached certificate of employment). The dug-out is now long gone, but next to it was a concrete structure utilised as a rest place by the man on duty, in which he could warm himself and brew up tea on the iron stove which remains in situ.
Such posts were manned by local men not able for more active service, in the wilder parts of the area often gamekeepers and ghillies. They tracked all aircraft, enemy and friendly, and reported by phone to the Inverness headquarters.
The post is now used as a sheep shelter, although the original boiler still remains in the middle of the floor. The corrugated iron roof is now half gone. The hyperlinked photos were taken in 1995.
