Full Description

The piece was found while metal-detecting, near one of the railway bridges at Smithton, probably on Forestry Commission Land. It has been dated by the V&A to the 13th or 14th century on the basis of a similar one from Italy, held in Ohio.

An unusual blue enamelled belt plaque, possibly medieval in date, was found in 1980. It is currently in Inverness Museum. INVMG 983.113.
