Full Description

A Hurricane aircraft crashed on Feb. 6th, 1944. Flew into a hill in bad weather. Little remains, hard to find. Serial No. LF207. Sqd. 516. <1>

Cairn containing the wreckage of Hurricane fighter plane which crashed into cliff in 6th February 1944 killing RNZAF Flight Lieutenant Arthur Woodgate of 516 Squadron 26 Group Bomber Command. The pilot was returning from a D-Day Combined Ops exercise at the Singing Sands when he and his two accompanying pilots became lost in bad visibility. <2>

A plaque stands on the slopes of Bein na Seilg on the opposite side of the lochans commemorating F/L Woodgate and the other pilot who died when his plane crashed on Coll - W/O J.E.Stephen RAF. <2>
