Monument record MHG30834 - Aircraft Crash Site, Creag Riabhach

GR amended from NC 937 119 to NC 93623 11721.

Mainly aluminium wreckage strewn between the two GR's (NC 93623 11721 & NC 93689 11665), on either side of a low heathery knoll, on the SW side of Creag Riabhach. Main impact at GR above and bear exposure of granite. Here much spent ammunition and small material. Small ciarn at NC 93809 11566, which has three metal cylinderical rods (100mm diameter) incorporated into it's construction. This cairn may be associated with the crash site. The plane may have been returning to base when the navigator got confused in Glen Loth, and flew down the wrong valley to the SW. The fifteen crew of canadian men were instantly killed and were all buried in Rosskeen graveyard.

A Sunderland aircraft crashed at Creag Riabhach (south west of Helmsdale), on August 15th, 1944. No further details surrounding the circumstances of the crash. Serial No. DP197. Sqd. 4O.T.U.
