Full Description
Linear Boundary Dyke, NC 82514 11097 to NC 82669 11088.
From the NE corner of the enclosure of Feature 035 (below), a 1m wide and 0.3m high, grass-covered dyke comprising large boulders, trends towards 070 degrees, obliquely up the moderately S-sloping, grass-covered hill to 282551 911102. It passes within 4m, below and to the S, of the burn-retaining bank of Feature 044 (below), then, defined by a coarse, single line of upstanding boulders (see Plate 7), 0.6m wide and 0.8m high, it takes a broad, gentle, uphill curve around to 282578 911094 at a natural rock outcrop. In this last section, there are a pair of prominent upstanding ‘gate post’ boulders, with a 2m gap in between, marking a possible entrance to the area within this head dyke feature. The boulder dyke then trends slightly uphill towards 085 degrees to a slight bend at 282599 911095, then trends 1080 to 282614 911091, where it is joined by the stone dyke of Feature 032 (below).
From this junction, this boundary dyke is immediately lost under spoil from the existing access track of Feature 001 (above), 7m to the E. It re-emerges on the E side of the track, trending 084 degrees as a broad, grass-covered ridge containing occasional large single boulders, to a bend at 282669 911088, where it turns to bear towards 154 degrees as the head dyke for Ascoilebeg below and to the SE. <1>
