Full Description

Grouse Butt.
Only a 0.4m outer thickness of the peat turf walls, surviving to 0.1m high, remain on this disused and severely degraded, 4m diameter grouse butt. It resembles a volcanic caldera, as the erosion of the peat walls has occurred from the inside, leaving a soft, bare peat ring where the former inner area of wall once was. The central area is mossy and grass-covered and the former entrance opens to 294 degrees. A single stone is visible in the wall construction marking the S entrance post. <1>
