Full Description
Trench Cutting.
Small, linear trench, cut neatly into small, dry peaty, 3m diameter knoll, sparsely covered in heather and grass tufts, surrounded by sedge-covered, peat bog on open moorland. The trench is 2m long, 0.4m wide and 0.2m deep and trends 106 degrees. The four, perfectly cut peat sods from the trench have been placed, upturned, carefully on the N edge of the trench and a rich cover of moss and lichen has grown over them, indicating that this is not a recent cut. The purpose of this feature is unknown and baffling, but is suggested to be connected to the sporting grouse butt features, maybe feeding areas for the grouse, to encourage their presence in the vicinity of the butts. <1>
