Full Description
Trench Cutting.
Small, slightly curvilinear trench, neatly cut into a dry knoll protruding from gently SSE-sloping boggy hillside, similar to Features 245 and 249 (above). The trench, at its upper end, does not cut completely through the knoll to connect with the boggy area uphill; it starts approximately 1m into the 5m diameter knoll, but does connect with, and abruptly stops at the boggy hillside below. The trench trends downhill 154 degrees and measures 5m long, 0.3m wide and 0.2m deep, with the carefully upturned peat sods laid neatly on the NE side of the trench. Heather and lichen grow richly on the upturned surfaces of the sods, so again, it is not a recent piece of work, and ages similarly with Features 245 and 249 (above).
Again, its purpose is very intriguing, as the orientation of the trench (i.e. downhill-trending) is not the best for containing feed and this trench is not close to any of the grouse butts previously described in Features 235-254 above. <1>
