Monument record MHG327 - Building, Loch Head

Loch Head settlement is situated immediately S of the A884 road on the southern shore at the head of Loch Sunart. Three unroofed buildings, one of which has an attached enclosure, and another incomplete enclosure were depicted on the OS 1st Ed. 6 inch Map, 1875 and may all be identified today in varying stages of preservation. The northernmost house (house 1), reroofed at some stage and recently refurbished, is still in use. The second house (house 2) to the W has been demolished but the revetment around a grassy platform in which an electricity pole has been erected, may be the remains. It may have been replaced by a more recent outbuilding further W. Another revetment, along a terrace on the S side of house 1, probably represents the incomplete enclosure recorded in 1875. The enclosure on the SE of the site, 25m E-W by 12m, is as recorded in 1875 and consists of a stone wall, 0,80m thick and 1.20m high, occasionally incorporating large natural boulders. A small structure (3), 5m E-W by 4m, is attached to the N side. Defined by a stone wall, 0.80m thick, it is built up on a boulder plinth at the W end, which reaches 1.50m in height.

Three unroofed buildings, one of which has an attached enclosure, and another incomplete enclosure are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire 1875, sheet xxviii), but they are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1990).
