Full Description
This site is located on the South side of the Abhainn Sron a’ Chreagain to the N of a modern deer fence. The configuration on the OS 1st Ed. 6” Map might be interpreted as an unroofed building with an attached enclosure (FESP, 1998). However, field verification reveals this structure to be a sheepfold of three unequal compartments. The sheepfold measures 20m NW-SE by 12m and is divided by a partition 6m from the NW end. The smaller compartment is then further subdivided. It is possible that an early house was reused but the present sheepfold is all of one build and defined by walls 0.80m thick and 1m high. A small sub-circular cell abuts the inner side of the E corner.
The adjacent field, recorded in 1875, is difficult to trace but fragments of an overgrown stony bank are discernible along the steep scarp slope above the river bank, eg at NN0649 7256. This enclosed field (but no house) is marked on a map of Ardgour Estate of 1813, when it was part of Dalindrein Farm.
