Full Description

A stone wall encloses the S side of a large area, trapezoidal in plan, otherwise bounded by, in the N, a loop in the Abhainn Sron a’ Chreagain and, in the W, by a tributary, Allt Clachaig. The enclosure is as depicted on the OS 1st Ed. 6” Map and is defined by a partly overgrown rubble wall, 1.20m thick and 0.50m high. The enclosure, labelled “Clachach” [stony], was recorded on a map of Ardgour Estate of 1813, when it was part of Dalindrein farm. A modern deer fence cuts across the SW end.

Within the heavily bracken-covered interior is a cluster of stony mounds, which are probably clearance cairns but could be demolished buildings. One mound, 10m NE-SW by 4.50m, is at NN0582 7272; another, 3m E, measures 12m E-W by 4m, and a third, 5m N, is 6m E-W by 4m. The mounds are all sub-rectangular in plan but no clear wall faces can be distinguished. A fourth feature at NN0589 7273, is a more definite structure, consisting of a small oval cell 3.40m NNE-SSW by 3m, defined by a wall, 0.50m thick and 0.80m high. The reduced wall in the ESE sector probably indicates the entrance. This structure could have been a lambing pen or possibly a shooting hide.
