Full Description

It has been suggested that the extremely large mound from which the water source for the Cloutie Well issues is a motte. The mound is substantial and would have had good views particularly to the NE but otherwise is not in a good defensive position as it is overshadowed by the hill to the E. The Hill is a large sub oval and under conifer forestry. The make up is not visible but occasionally stones are visible akin to those gathered as spoil in the field opposite. There is no evidence of a surrounding ditch or any earthworks, so it is unlikely that this is a motte, unless it was a temporarily defended site guarding the road. It is much more likely that the well itself has been of significance issuing as it does from part way up the hill. - HAW 4/2004
