Monument record MHG33383 - Scorcher's Gully, Lower Tomvaich Wood

A deep circular depression in the ground, some 120' in circumference and over 25' deep, is located on a high bank. Although surrounded by trees none grow in the depression itself. The gaelic description for the feature is 'Lag na Dothaig' which translates as 'hole of slight singing/scorching'. This compares with the commmom description of 'Scorcher's Gully'. What does it mean? Legend hints that this may have been the result of a meteor strike or perhaps it refers to an ancient cremation site. Bronze Age standing stones are located just over a mile away to the south east at Upper Port Farm.
