NH80NW 35 8241 0500 to NH 8499 0742. MR 2 (formerly Lin 501 [part of]).
Much of the Wade road between NH 8241 0500 and NH 8499 0742 may have followed the line of the modern road. However, initially it traverses a birch wood to the present Suie Hotel at Kincraig. It is difficult to trace in this section, although a stretch of 200 yards in the middle is clearly visible. The general direction of the road is evident enough due to the stretches that survive. N of the hotel there are no visible signs of Wade's road for one mile, although it is possible that it then continued along the line of the present railway track for approximately half a mile. The next traceable section is at NH 841 069 (Baker and Baker 1982), at the gate of Alvie Lodge, a point difficult to spot as it looks like the commencement of a forestry path through a wood of old Scots pines. Having turned right into this wood, it then takes a left turn after about 200 yards at NH 844 068 (Taylor 1976) and thereafter heads E, crossing a track running S to Spey Bank opposite the drive to Alvie Lodge. Curving away from a junction with the B9152, it continues through forestry land.
J B Salmond 1938; W Taylor 1976; J and A Baker 1982.
NH 8241 0500 to NH 8254 0524 only vague traces of Wade's road visible, partially destroyed by quarry.
NH 8254 0524 to NH 8430 0711 no trace. Modern road probably on line.
NH 8430 0711 to NH 8499 0742 Wade's road well preserved 4m wide between flanking banks.
Visited by OS.
The military road, in the form of a track passing through a conifer plantation, is difficult to trace near Alvie Gate, particularly since saplings have been planted on the route in this stretch with consequential damage to any surviving road fabric. Further N tree felling has caused difficulties of access to the track, which is stony and overgrown and measures about 4m wide between low banks.
M Logie (Highland Council) 1997; NMRS MS 1007/2.
NH 848 073 (centre) A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken of a proposed sand and gravel quarry. Within the development area is a small stretch of military road (NMRS NH 80 NW 35) surviving only as a shallow depression, with no sign of associated ditches. No other archaeological features were noted in the proposed development area.
Report lodged with Highland SMR and the NMRS.
