What is probably the remains of a large artificial mound is situated on a natural rise immediately to the E of the modern wall enclosing the fields at Tarbert, about 150m to the NNW of the farmstead NG20NW 26. It is roughly oval on plan, measuring 10m from E to W by 9m, and has been damaged extensively by rabbit burrowing.
During the course of the survey (1994-6), several artefacts were recovered from the upcast of these rabbit scrapes, the majority having been collected during the final season of fieldwork. They include a flint chip, a beach pebble, a piece of pumice and pottery sherds, amongst which there were two sherds of Unstan ware, decorated with obliquely incised lines, together with two rim sherds and a basal sherd belonging to a broad flat-bottomed vessel.
Another low mound (NG 2377 0552) is situated 68m to the SE and is overlain by the modern wall extending NNW from Tarbert farmstead; this mound measures 10m from E to W by 8m but has not been damaged by rabbit burrowing and no pottery has been recovered.
(Canna 26, 275).
Visited by RCAHMS (IMS, ARG), 6 June 1994.
Sherds of pottery, including four rim sherds and one body sherd with a lug, were recovered from the upcast of rabbit scrapes into this mound during fieldwork in May 2001 (NG 2372 0557).
(Finds to be deposited in the NMS).
Visited by RCAHMS (ARG, SPH), 10 May 2001.
