Three rectangular huts and four narrow rectangular structures lie at the NW end of Sanday, two of the huts lying on the rocky foreshore, and the others on a terrace above. The largest of the three huts (NG 2643 0468) lies on the terrace and has been reduced to its rubble footings; it measures 6m from ENE to WSW by 3.2m transversely overall.
The narrow structures are all defined by two parallel rows of boulders, with the exception of one which has been entirely robbed of stones and survives only as a shallow groove in the turf. The largest is 4.7m in length and they range in breadth from 1m to 1.2m. Their siting on a terrace above the shore suggests that they may be kelp kilns, and as such they probably date to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century when the kelp-making industry was at its peak.
(Canna 13-18, 693).
Visited by RCAHMS (ARG), 8 March 1996.
