In 1846 it was reported that it had been found necessary to widen this embankment through Loch Dochfour to enable it to carry a road.

This embankment is clearly visible on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, sheet xix), on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1905, sheet xix), on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1975) and on the OS Basic Scale raster map (ND).
The embankment carries the current A82 through the N part of Loch Dochfour, cutting off the NW section of the loch from the waterway formed by the Caledonian Canal linking lochs between Fort William and Inverness.
