----
NH64NW 30.06 6498 4503.

In the 1840s this basin or place for turning steamers above the Muirtown Locks (NH64NE 119.04) was created by widening the outside of a bend in the canal. The basin was also utilised as a base for laying up steamers across the winter and for overhauling them. Today there is a boat-building yard (NH64NW 30.08) at Burnfoot and the basin also acts as a base for a fleet of cruisers for hire, probably the oldest ones on the canal.
G Hutton 1992.

This basin on the W side of the canal is clearly visible on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet xii), on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1906, sheet xii), on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1985) and on the OS Basic Scale raster map (ND).
Information from RCAHMS (MD) 3 October 2001.
