Bridge History - Inverness Stone Bridge of 7 arches built 1681-4. Fell down due to bursting of canal bank. Depicted in a painting by Turner. It had a hollow 'leg' used as a prison which was infested with rats, then it was used for the mentally handicapped. The stone from the bridge was used to prevent erosion at Ness Islands. It was taken from Beauly Priory to build the bridge - possibly freshly quarried for the Priory? Recycled. Cost &1300.00 by subscription.
