Monument record MHG39235 - Possible Standing Stone, Camster

A large stone approaching 1.5m lies beside the gate to the new forestry access road, car park and picnic bench on the E side of the road. Suspicious in this landscape. May conceivably have been used as a gate post in the past, but no obvious boundary it could have been used for. Possible disturbed standing stone ? Lies c.415m N of the standing stones/stone circle on the E side of the road. But seems to be laller and more dominant shape than those that survive there. Modern gatepost stone is smaller and of obviously different type and manufacture. Photographed. <1>

Field survey, carried out in association with the proposed windfarm development at Camster, found it situated on top of
the track surface adjacent to the gate and small picnic area. The Stone measured 1.5m in length, 1m in width and 0.2m in height, resting in a supine position. The stone has clearly been moved from its original location and as such any potential past function is unclear. <2>
