Full Description

Report by Mick Broad of a remains of icehouse under Harbour Rd. Not marked on 1st or 2nd ed OS map - HAW 06/2005

MB: The original ice store in Pulteneytown is believed to be constructed beneath Harbour Road (that area to the north of the road with a flight of steps? Shown on the attached 1872 plan). Phase three of the CERS project to provide both a heritage trail and safe part of the Wick Paths Project from the Harbour to South Head Quarry includes for providing access to and featuring the old ice store. Work by ILM includes for building the path to the store and for excavating the half storey of fill that has accumulated both within and outside the two storey arched vault under the road. Funding for then illuminating and securing and utilising and exhibiting the store with access arranged by key from the Wick Museum has been sought. Excavation of the debris and fill material has exposed on one side the “race” beneath large flag cover stones leading out towards the sea and connected to shafts up behind the back wall to the street levels above.
