Full Description

The remains of eight shielings consist on the whole of low grassy mounds with the out-line of rectangular foundations on top and vary in size from c3m square to 9m by 3.5m. In this area, Sleach Water has overflowed its banks and water surounds several of mounds. Several other mounds were observed as possible shielings but could not be investigated due to flood water.
Some 36m E of this group of shielings is a circular structure of turf about 7m in diameter with entrance 0.6m wide in its S side and a slight mound at its centre. The remains of another shieling are situated on W bank of Sleach Water c200m W of main group.
Visited by OS (W D J) 16 April 1961.

(ND 063 460) Old Shielings (NAT) OS 6" map, (1963)

11 shieling bothies occur on site; some are evident simply as reed and turf-covered mounds, others are better preserved and exhibit their compartmented structure. The circular feature is probably a stock enclosure contemporary with shielings.
Revised at 1:10560. Visited by OS (J B) 17 March 1982.

Seven unroofed shieling-huts are depicted on 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet xxvii). The remains of nine unroofed shieling-huts are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1963). The water level of Loch More has risen and this site is now partly flooded.
